How to Plan the Perfect Beach Day with Your Dog

written by Tori Holmes

When the sun's shining and the waves are calling, there's nothing quite like a trip to the beach.

A day at the dog beach can be a special experience for both you and your four-legged friend, but before you head out, let's dive into some essential tips to ensure a safe and happy beach day for all.

Tip #1: Research dog-friendly beaches

If you’re considering a trip to the dog beach, you’ll want to start your planning by doing a little bit of research. Not all beaches are created equal when it comes to welcoming our canine pals, so look into the options for an official “dog beach” in your area. These beaches typically have specific areas where dogs are allowed to roam and play freely, allowing your pup to enjoy the beach without a leash.

Tip #2: Know the rules

Once you've found the perfect dog beach, familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations. Some beaches may have specific hours when dogs are allowed, leash requirements when entering or exiting the beach, or even restrictions on dogs entering certain areas. By knowing the rules beforehand, you can avoid any unexpected surprises and ensure a “paw-sitive” experience for all beachgoers.

Tip #3: Pack the essentials

A successful day at the dog beach starts with proper preparation. There are a few essential items that you’ll want to bring with you for your beach day, including:

●     Freshpet: Dogs need regular meals to maintain their energy levels, especially if they're expending extra energy playing in the sand and surf. Make sure that you’ve got a portion of their favorite Freshpet recipe and fresh treats on hand to help them stay fueled throughout the day.

●     Travel cooler: Freshpet recipes can’t sit out for more than an hour, so if you’re going to be at the beach all day, you’ll want to bring a cooler to store your dog’s meals. This freezable snack cooler by Cerbonny is a great choice due to its compact size and the fact that it can be clipped on to your larger beach bag for easy transportation.

●     Collapsible bowls: If you’re at the dog beach all day, there’s a good chance that your pup will need a snack or even a full meal. These collapsible silicone bowls from SLSON are great because they can be flatted down to easily fit in your beach bag. They even have a lid you can put on the bowl in case your dog doesn’t eat their entire meal in one go!

●     Microfiber towel: Sand and salt can cause irritation if not removed from your dog’s skin and coat. Before you head back to the car, give your dog a good once-over with a microfiber towel, such as this one by Bone Dry to remove any sand, salt, or debris from their fur. Pay special attention to their paws, as sand and salt can be especially annoying here if left unchecked.

●     Pet-safe sunscreen: Dogs can suffer from both short and long-term effects of sun exposure. Pet-safe sunscreen can provide your pup with a little extra protection on areas such as their nose, ears, and belly where they don’t have the protection of fur. Banana Boat now makes a sunscreen specifically for dogs that is safe to put on their skin and fur.

Tip #4: Stay cool

Hydration is important, especially if your pup has been running around the dog beach. Throughout the day make sure that your dog has access to shade and fresh water to ensure that they don’t overheat. It’s a good idea to pack plenty of fresh water in your cooler as carry a portable water bowl, such as this one from MalsiPree. This way, if you go for a walk along the beach so your dog always has access to fresh water.

Tip #5: Safety first

When it comes to dogs and water, safety should always be a top priority. While you’re at the dog beach, keep a close eye on your pup, especially if this is their first time around water. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, so it’s a good idea for those who fall into this category to wear a life jacket if they want to take a dip. A great option is the Granby Splash life jacket from Outward Hound, which has a front neck float to help keep your dog's head above water. And remember, a leash can be a lifesaver in crowded or unfamiliar environments, so don't hesitate to use one if needed!

By following these dog beach tips, you can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable day for all. So grab your beach gear, pack up your pup, and get ready for a tail-wagging good time at the dog beach!
